2010 Fresh Water Summit Hosted By Muskoka

News:

Today in the House, MPP for Parry Sound-Muskoka Norm Miller announced the start of the upcoming 2010 Freshwater Summit taking place on June 1st and 2nd. The event is being hosted by the Town of Bracebridge, the District Municipality of Muskoka, the Muskoka Watershed Council, and Nipissing University.

The forum on freshwater seeks to highlight issues and trends surrounding the management of freshwater, and will strive to develop sound policy options to deal with freshwater protection. The conclusions of the Summit are to be presented to the provincial and federal government, as well as the Canadian contingent at the G8. Freshwater management is critical for policy-makers as it has economic, social, and environmental implications.

In addition to targeting policy-makers, the Summit also seeks to educate the general public, academics, and the private sector about the importance of freshwater management. A parallel summit is also being planned for High School students across the Muskoka region, in order to educate youth about their role in protecting freshwater.

Quotes:

“The 2010 Freshwater Summit is an important step in developing a comprehensive plan to protect our inland lakes and rivers, and I would invite all those interested in the future of our freshwater to attend.”
--Norm Miller, MPP Parry Sound – Muskoka

“Ontario’s Environmental Commissioner Gord Miller will be making a presentation. Also, there will be a number of experts on freshwater policy from across Ontario’s universities in attendance. It will be an excellent opportunity to gather a consortium of good ideas, and contribute to the policy debate surrounding water management.”
